When to Start

Best Seasons & Auspicious Times

The timing of starting Narmada Parikrama is as important as the journey itself. Pilgrims believe that choosing the right season, aligning with spiritual calendars, and preparing the body and mind ensures a smooth and fulfilling Parikrama. Here is a complete guide on when to begin this sacred journey.

Best Time of the Year

1. Winter Season (October – February)

  • Considered the ideal time to start Parikrama.
  • Pleasant weather, cool breeze, and easy walking conditions.
  • Many saints and ashrams recommend Kartik month (October–November) as the most auspicious.

2. Spring Season (March – April)

  • Good for those who prefer moderate weather.
  • However, summer heat begins after April, so it can become challenging.

3. Monsoon (June – September)

  • Generally not recommended due to heavy rains, flooded ghats, and difficult walking conditions.
  • Some experienced Parikramavasis still walk during this time, considering it a test of surrender and devotion.

Auspicious Months According to Hindu Calendar

  • Kartik Month (Oct–Nov): Starting in Kartik Shukla Paksha is highly auspicious.
  • Makar Sankranti (January): Many pilgrims begin their Parikrama on this sacred festival.
  • Mahashivratri: As Narmada is considered the daughter of Lord Shiva, starting Parikrama on this day is deeply symbolic.

Practical Considerations Before Starting

  • Health & Fitness: Ensure your body is prepared for walking long distances daily.
  • Clothing & Essentials: Winter-friendly clothing, sturdy footwear, and minimal baggage.
  • Ashram Coordination: Some ashrams along the route guide pilgrims with timing and starting points.
  • Leave Sanction (if working): The journey takes 3 years, 3 months, and 13 days for traditional Parikrama, though shorter symbolic versions are also practiced.

Spiritual Note

While seasons and festivals provide guidance, saints often say:
“When the Narmada calls you, that is the right time.”
Trust in divine timing, prepare sincerely, and begin when your heart feels ready.
